The incident took place at approximately 4:55 pm on Monday, 26 October 2026, when a grey Toyota Yaris collided head-on with a silver Toyota Proace van. Emergency services responded to the scene on the major arterial route, where the teenager driving the Toyota Yaris was found with serious injuries.

What happened during the A338 head-on collision near East Hanney?

As reported by Albert Tait of the Oxford Mail, emergency personnel arrived to find the grey Toyota Yaris and the silver Toyota Proace van severely damaged following the impact on the A338.

The 19-year-old male driver of the Toyota Yaris sustained severe injuries including multiple bone fractures and was rushed to hospital, where he continues to receive ongoing medical treatment. Authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made at this stage of the investigation.

What are Thames Valley Police saying about the investigation?

As reported by Thames Valley Police Media Relations, investigating officer PC David Lund, of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit, outlined the force’s current appeal.

“We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of this collision and I am appealing to anybody who witnessed it, or the moments leading up to it, to come forward if they have not already spoken to police,” stated PC David Lund.

Officers believe several motorists stopped immediately following the incident but departed before police could obtain their details.

“We believe a number of people stopped at the scene following the collision, however there may be other motorists or members of the public who saw what happened and left before officers were able to speak to them,” PC David Lund added. “I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who was travelling on the A338 near East Hanney at around 4.55pm and may have dash-cam footage that has captured either the collision itself or the vehicles in the moments beforehand.”

How can witnesses submit information or dash-cam footage?

As reported by Thames Valley Police officers, anyone with information, dash-cam recordings, or relevant evidence is asked to make an official report online via the force’s website or call the non-emergency number 101, quoting incident reference number 43260560712.

Background of the particular development

The A338 is a key route connecting Wantage and Abingdon through the rural Vale of White Horse district in Oxfordshire. Rural single-carriageway A-roads across the region have historically seen high traffic volumes during late afternoon rush hours, where variable lighting and junction movements can increase collision risks.

Prediction: How this development can affect commuters and local residents

This development is likely to prompt heightened scrutiny from Oxfordshire local authorities and highways management regarding traffic safety along the A338 corridor. For regular commuters and local residents in East Hanney and surrounding villages, the incident may result in temporary speed enforcement measures or local community calls for improved road markings and street lighting during winter peak travel hours.
