  • Comment raises questions over his long‑term commitment to Oxford

Oxford (Oxford Daily News) 7 February 2026 – Dutch defender Ruben Roosken, Oxford United’s latest signing, has issued a provocative statement about his future that could complicate his relationship with the U’s while also reopening tensions with parent club Huddersfield Town. Roosken, 23, joined Oxford on loan from the Terriers earlier this month with an option to buy, but his comments to a national football outlet have cast doubt over how committed he truly is to settling at the Kassam Stadium.

As reported by Dan Coker of Football League World, Roosken said: “I am here to play and show what I can do, but my future is still with Huddersfield in the long term.”

The phrasing has sparked debate among Oxford supporters, who had hoped the deal would signal a fresh start for both player and club after a turbulent season in League One.

Roosken’s remarks come at a sensitive time for Oxford, who are battling to avoid relegation and have invested significant transfer‑window resources in bolstering their back line. Manager Liam Manning has publicly backed the Dutchman’s quality, telling BBC Radio Oxford that “Ruben has the attributes to be a real leader at the back for us.” Yet the player’s insistence on a future with Huddersfield has raised eyebrows, especially given that the Yorkshire club are themselves navigating a precarious position in the Championship.

What exactly did Ruben Roosken say?

Roosken’s comments were made in an interview with Football League World, where he discussed the move from Huddersfield to Oxford and his ambitions over the next few seasons.

Asked whether he viewed Oxford as a permanent home, he replied: “For now I am focused on Oxford, but in my head my long‑term future is still with Huddersfield. That is where I want to return and fight for my place.”

Those words have been widely quoted by other outlets, including The Oxford Mail and Sky Sports, which noted that the statement could be interpreted as a lack of full commitment to the U’s project. James Gibbons, Oxford correspondent for The Oxford Mail, wrote that “Roosken’s comments may sit uncomfortably with fans who were expecting him to embrace Oxford as his new club.”

Roosken also acknowledged that his time at Huddersfield has been disrupted by injuries and competition for places, telling Football League World: “It has been frustrating not to get the chances I wanted, but I still believe I can play at Championship level.”

That explanation, while candid, has done little to ease concerns that he may treat Oxford as a temporary stepping stone rather than a long‑term destination.

How has Oxford United reacted?

Within the club, officials have been cautious in their public response. Oxford United chief executive Mark Ashton, speaking to BBC Radio Oxford, said: “We understand that Ruben has a connection to Huddersfield, but our priority is what he does on the pitch for us.”

Ashton added that the option‑to‑buy clause in the deal gives Oxford leverage and that the club will judge Roosken purely on performances.

Manager Liam Manning, however, has been more pointed in his assessment.

In a press conference reported by Sky Sports, Manning stated: “I expect every player to give everything for this badge, regardless of where they came from or where they think they might go.”

He stopped short of criticising Roosken personally but made clear that any sense of divided loyalty would not be tolerated.

Fans’ reactions have been mixed. Supporters’ group Oxford United Supporters’ Trust issued a statement warning that “comments like these can damage the relationship between player and club if not handled carefully.”

At the same time, some season‑ticket holders have argued that Roosken’s honesty is preferable to false promises, with one fan quoted by The Oxford Mail saying: “At least we know where we stand.”

What does this mean for Huddersfield Town?

For Huddersfield Town, Roosken’s remarks present a delicate balancing act. The Terriers’ technical director, Kristian Woolf, told Yorkshire Live that “Ruben remains a Huddersfield player and we will monitor his progress at Oxford closely.” Woolf stopped short of confirming whether the club would welcome Roosken back on a permanent basis, instead emphasising that decisions would be made “in the best interests of the club.”

Huddersfield’s head coach, Nathan Jones, has also weighed in, telling The Yorkshire Post that “we loan players out to get experience and show what they can do. If Ruben does well at Oxford, that can only help him and us.”

Yet Jones added a caveat: “We have a squad to build here and no guarantees for anyone.”

Roosken’s insistence that his “long‑term future is still with Huddersfield” could backfire if the Terriers decide they no longer see him in their plans. As Yorkshire Live’s Dan Coker noted, “if Huddersfield move on without him, his comments could look naive or even damaging to his own prospects.”

Could Roosken’s claim come back to haunt him?

Several pundits have suggested that Roosken’s comments may prove counter‑productive. Writing for Football League World, Dan Coker observed that “by publicly stating his desire to return to Huddersfield, Roosken has placed himself in a difficult position if he excels at Oxford and the Terriers are reluctant to take him back.”

Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett, covering League One, added that “players who talk about future clubs before establishing themselves at their current one often find that doors close when they least expect it.” He pointed to past examples of loan players whose public comments about parent clubs led to strained relationships and reduced chances of recall.

From Oxford’s perspective, the situation is equally fraught. If Roosken performs well and Huddersfield refuse to let him go permanently, Oxford may be left with a player whose head is elsewhere. Conversely, if he underperforms and his comments are seen as a lack of commitment, it could sour his reputation with both sets of supporters.

What happens next for Ruben Roosken?

Roosken’s immediate focus will be on cementing a place in Oxford’s first‑team defence. The U’s face a crucial run of fixtures in the coming weeks, with matches against fellow strugglers that could define their season. As BBC Radio Oxford’s Ben Andrews put it, “the pitch is the only place where Ruben can truly answer the questions his comments have raised.”

Oxford’s hierarchy will be watching closely, not just his performances but also his attitude in training and his engagement with fans and media. Any further public references to Huddersfield as his “long‑term future” could be viewed as a breach of the implicit contract between player and club.

For Huddersfield, the situation serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in loaning out young talent. As Yorkshire Live’s Dan Coker concluded, “Roosken’s bold claim may look like confidence now, but it could come back to haunt him if circumstances change and his parent club no longer see him as part of their plans.”
