Oxfordshire Landfill Fire Brings Eight Fire Crews to Scene

People started Calling the Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service came in at 5.43pm last night (Sunday, August 9) since people saw a big, strong fire smoke at Greenways Landfill site, Appleford Sidings, Sutton Courtenay.

This smoke could be seen from miles away in all directions which made people panic and calling the rescue immediately.

Cllr Ian Snowdon, who represents uk/local/didcot/">Didcot, said:

“A large fire has broken out at the Didcot landfill site this evening, with emergency services currently on scene.
Eight fire crews attended the scene and a new update has now been provided by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service this morning (Monday, August 10).

A spokesperson said:

“This was a fire involving a large volume of non-hazardous processed landfill and waste material.

“Attending were eight crews, one high volume pump, vehicles, and a water carrier.

“There was also a multi-terrain water carrier from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue.

“The fire was brought under control. Fire and rescue have retained a presence on scene overnight and into Monday to continue working with the site operatives and managers to resolve the incident and hand it back to them.

“The cause is not believed to be of a suspicious nature and further investigations will be undertaken in the coming days.”

Therefore, people should carefully monitor their land and surrounding areas to prevent any future fires and ensure their safety. This can be done by:

Intake Screening: Implement rigorous visual and thermal inspections at entry points to quarantine “hot loads” like lithium-ion batteries, pressurized aerosols, and smoldering debris before they enter processing areas.

Thermal Imaging: Deploy continuous thermal cameras over conveyor belts, sorting lines, and outdoor piles to detect heat signatures (like battery thermal runaway) minutes before visible flames appear.

Equipment Maintenance: Install onboard fire suppression systems on heavy machinery and conduct regular maintenance to prevent hydraulic oil leaks or engine overheating from igniting accumulated trash.
