The public consultations regarding a possible late-night Covered Market economy are nearing their deadline for the 26th of May, deciding essentially whether the idea will be eventually licensed towards implementation or not.
This happens after Lula’s Ethiopian Cafe & Deli – in the Oxford Covered Markets – has submitted a formal request, under Section 17 of the Licensing Act 2003, to authorise the supply of alcohol from Tuesday to Sunday, with also the proposal of an extension to the opening hours up to 10:00 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
This application serves as a good indicator to the disputed position of the Oxford City Council’s ongoing vision to transform the traditional Covered Market – a daytime retail place for the local producers – into a modernised centre of retail and hospitality tourist attraction.
The proposal for the late night extension comes with the reaction of business owner Lula Kinnaird who complained about the difficult Oxford urban congestion charge and low-emission zone transport infrastructure. Lula argued that because of them supplying within certain hours is rather difficult for her and other commercials, disclosing that for her it meant even penalties up to £1000 due to misunderstandings with the City Council regarding her private vehicle used as supplier.
The upcoming 26th of May deadline practically offers the time to market tenants, commercial neighbours as well as local residents to submit to the Town Hall formal responses in regard to this proposal for an expansion of trading hours.
This will be direct evidence to the City Council to see whether their plan for a commercialised Covered Market is feasible or not.
Stay tuned to hear the upcoming decision!
