Ascot (Oxford Daily) October 17, 2026 –Mount Atlas produced a late burst of speed to capture the Qatar Racing British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot at odds of 33-1, striking a crucial blow in the British Flat Trainers’ Championship.

Ridden by jockey PJ McDonald, the five-year-old gelding made a late challenge up the inside rail to overtake Ballydoyle’s Queenstown, who had looked set for victory under Ryan Moore.

The victory provided trainer Andrew Balding with a valuable outcome on British Champions Day as he continues his tight title duel with Irish rival Aidan O’Brien.

Mount Atlas crossed the line three-quarters of a length ahead of Queenstown (14-1), with St Leger hero Highwayman taking third and Gregory finishing fourth.

How Did the Race Unfold on the Track?

As reported by Racing TV, the early stages of the two-mile contest saw Quickthorn set the tempo before weakening as the field turned into the home straight.

Queenstown and Ryan Moore moved clear past the half-mile pole, whilst Gregory and James Doyle kept Highwayman pinned along the rail.

When space finally opened up, PJ McDonald drove Mount Atlas through a gap along the inside rail to challenge the leaders.

“PJ has been a big contributor and I’m delighted for PJ. It panned out great for him today as he had cover right until he needed to get out, so it couldn’t have worked out better.”

— Andrew Balding, Trainer (as reported by Sporting Life)

Mount Atlas responded instantly, passing Queenstown inside the final furlong to grab the victory.

“We thought he might get placed, but PJ has given him an absolutely stellar ride. Just at the right time he got out as he doesn’t want to hit the front too soon and it has panned out perfectly.”

— Andrew Balding, Trainer (as reported by Sporting Life)

What Reaction Did the Connections Have to the Triumph?

As reported by Carl Markham of the Press Association, Mount Atlas had entered the Group 1 contest as an outsider following a third-place finish in the Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup at York in August.

However, the gelding proved suited to the trip, giving owners Kingsclere Racing Club a major Group 1 winner on the ultimate day of the British Flat racing season.

Balding noted that the late-running tactics suited Mount Atlas, praising McDonald for maintaining patience until an opening appeared along the rails.

Queenstown ran a credible race in second for Aidan O’Brien, having previously finished third in the Prix du Cadran.

Highwayman and Gregory battled on to claim the remaining prize-money positions in a competitive renewal of the staying feature.

Background of the Development

The British Champions Long Distance Cup serves as the ultimate staying test on British Champions Day, the curtain-closer to the European Flat racing season held annually at Ascot. The 2026 renewal arrived during a tense fight for the British Flat Trainers’ Championship between Kingsclere trainer Andrew Balding and Aidan O’Brien.

Mount Atlas, a five-year-old gelding by Masar out of Highland Pass, had steadily progressed through the handicap ranks before stepping into pattern company.

Earlier in the season, he secured victory in the Group 3 Silver Cup at York before placing third behind top-tier stayers in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup. Despite his consistent form, market expectations placed him as a longshot behind proven Group 1 winners.

Prediction: How Will This Development Affect Racing Fans and Punters?

This victory will likely impact horse racing followers, punters, and bookmakers in several ways:

  • Staking Strategies for Longshots: Pointers will note that stamina-heavy staying races on soft end-of-season ground at Ascot frequently yield high-priced winners, encouraging more backing for unconsidered outsiders on British Champions Day.
  • Shift in Trainer Championship Odds: Racing enthusiasts following the trainers’ championship will see a close battle between Andrew Balding and Aidan O’Brien down to the final events of the campaign.
  • Future Campaign Expectations: Mount Atlas will no longer be overlooked in major staying events, likely starting at significantly shorter odds in top-level staying races such as the Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup next season.
