Key Points

  • Hospital workers at Dora Nginza Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, initiated a strike on April 13, 2026, over poor working conditions.
  • Key grievances include inadequate staffing, faulty equipment, lack of protective gear, unhygienic facilities, and low wages.
  • The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) leads the action, demanding immediate improvements.
  • Striking workers blocked hospital entrances, halting non-emergency services and affecting patient admissions.
  • Management claims essential services continue, but reports indicate delays in routine care.
  • No violence reported, but tensions rise with police monitoring the site.
  • This follows prior complaints to the Eastern Cape Department of Health, which has not responded adequately.

Cowley(Oxford Daily)April 13, 2026 – Workers at Dora Nginza Hospital downed tools in a strike over dire working conditions, disrupting operations at the key public facility in Nelson Mandela Bay. Hospital support staff, including cleaners, security guards, and maintenance workers, walked off the job early on April 13, 2026. As reported by Sinesipho Fele of Daily Sun, the workers cited “unbearable” conditions, stating,

“We cannot work like this anymore; the equipment is broken, toilets are filthy, and we lack basic protective clothing.”

The action, coordinated by NEHAWU, saw dozens gather at the hospital gates in Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth. Protesters chanted slogans and blocked vehicle access, preventing ambulances from offloading non-critical patients. NEHAWU Eastern Cape secretary Lwazi Ngcawanayo told Daily Sun,

“Our members have endured years of neglect. Faulty lifts trap patients, water leaks everywhere, and staffing shortages force overwork.”

Why Are Dora Nginza Workers Protesting Poor Conditions?

Grievances span multiple areas. According to Babalwa Ngcobo, a cleaner quoted in Daily Sun, “We clean with broken mops and no gloves. Sewage overflows in staff areas, posing health risks.” Security worker Thabo Mthembu added,

“No radios or lights work at night; we risk assaults without gear.”

NEHAWU’s list includes 15 broken lifts across wards, non-functional generators leading to blackouts, and rodent infestations in kitchens. Wages remain below inflation adjustments, with entry-level staff earning R4,500 monthly. As per GroundUp coverage by journalist Nombulelo Mpako on similar past disputes, these issues echo chronic underfunding in Eastern Cape health facilities.

Hospital management, via spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo, responded in a statement to Daily Sun:

“Emergency services remain operational. We urge workers to return for dialogue.”

Kupelo noted outpatient clinics closed, but ICU and maternity wards function with skeleton staff.

How Has the Strike Impacted Patient Care at Dora Nginza?

Patients faced immediate disruptions. Eyewitness Mpho Sokopo, waiting for a check-up, told Daily Sun, “I arrived at 6am; no one attends to us. Elective surgeries cancelled.” Reports from IOL News, attributed to health reporter Kamvelihle Ngqwala, confirm at least 50 admissions diverted to neighbouring Frere Hospital.

No deaths linked to the strike so far, but NEHAWU warns of risks. Ngcawanayo stated,

“Patients suffer when we cannot maintain hygiene or respond promptly.”

Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth has not commented publicly by midday, though department officials arrived for talks.

Police from SAPS Nelson Mandela Bay maintained a presence to prevent escalation, as per Daily Dispatch update by crime reporter Andisiwe Makinana:

“No arrests; situation calm but tense.”

What Demands Are NEHAWU Making in the Dora Nginza Dispute?

The union presented a memorandum to management outlining fixes. Top demands:

  • Repair all lifts and generators within 48 hours.
  • Provide personal protective equipment (PPE) stock.
  • Address sanitation by installing functional toilets and pest control.
  • Increase staffing by 30% in support roles.
  • Wage parity with national public service scales.

Ngcawanayo emphasised to Daily Sun,

“We submitted complaints months ago; no action. This strike enforces accountability.”

NEHAWU threatens escalation to a full shutdown if unmet by April 15.

Management acknowledged receipt, promising a response by end of day. Kupelo said, “We value our workers and prioritise patient safety.”

What Is the History of Labour Issues at Dora Nginza Hospital?

Prior strikes hit the facility in 2022 over similar woes, resolved temporarily via arbitration. Health-e News journalist Qaanitah Hunter reported then that R200 million in maintenance backlog plagued Eastern Cape hospitals.

Dora Nginza, a 600-bed tertiary hospital serving 1.2 million residents, receives annual budgets strained by national shortfalls. Auditor-General reports flag persistent infrastructure deficits.
