  • Attackers stabbed 21-year-old Swansea native Jamie Collins over 30 times outside the housemates’ shared home in Filton, South Gloucestershire.

  • Security footage recorded Coughlan dressed in black with a mask and gloves during the 8 April 2026 attack, after which he waited eight hours to call police and report finding the body.
  • Members of Collins’s family called him a gentle soul and said they were disgusted by Coughlan’s lies following the killing.

FILTON (Oxford Daily) October 21, 2026 – A 23-year-old university student who fatally stabbed his housemate in a calculated ambush in South Gloucestershire has been jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 28 years. Zack Coughlan attacked 21-year-old Jamie Collins, a fellow final-year robotics student, outside their shared three-bedroom property on Cleve Road in Filton. How Did The Fatal Incident Unfold On Cleve Road?

As reported by Sian Roche of Greatest Hits Radio, Coughlan dressed entirely in black, wearing a mask and gloves, to ambush Collins as he returned home from UWE Bristol shortly before 6:00 pm on April 8.

Collins, originally from Swansea, was struck in the garden and suffered more than 30 stab wounds.

Following the attack, Coughlan rode away from the scene using Collins’s bicycle, leaving him dying in an alleyway.

As detailed by Olivier Vergnault of Bristol Live, Coughlan subsequently purchased a fresh set of clothes, dumped the victim’s bicycle at a nearby retail park, and threw his bloodstained outfit into a pond.

Coughlan returned to the shared home at 9:00 pm before making an emergency call to police at 2:07 am on April 9, falsely claiming he had just discovered his housemate stabbed in the garden.

“You will have just heard that the defendant has changed his plea to the indictment to guilty. That means that he now admits the charge of murder.”

— Mr Justice Linden, Trial Judge at Bristol Crown Court

What Motivated The Attack According To Court Testimony?

As reported by the Press Association, the court heard that friction had developed between the two students over political viewpoints and housing arrangements.

Coughlan, who is half-Danish and was raised in Cork, Ireland, had moved to Bristol at age 19 to study robotics.

In July 2024, his mother lent him £300,000 to purchase the three-bedroom residence on Cleve Road, where he lived alongside Collins and another student.

During the trial, Coughlan claimed he felt threatened after Collins expressed anti-capitalist and anti-landlord views, expressing frustration over paying rent to live in a friend’s house.

In his ruling, trial judge Mr Justice Linden noted that Coughlan had grown deeply upset by the realization that Collins disliked him.

The judge described Collins as an idealist and a “gentle soul” who took a keen interest in societal issues, noting that friends unanimously considered him exceptionally kind and considerate.

Why Did The Defendant Change His Plea During Trial?

Coughlan originally admitted to manslaughter but denied murder, seeking a partial defence based on loss of control.

However, Mr Justice Linden ruled that the defence of loss of control could not legally be submitted to the jury for consideration.

Following this legal determination, Coughlan altered his plea to guilty of murder.

As reported by Sian Roche of Greatest Hits Radio, Coughlan admitted under cross-examination by defense counsel Dan Pawson-Pounds KC that he was the masked figure on CCTV footage and had left Collins’s body near the rear gate for nearly eight and a half hours before dialing 999.

Coughlan also acknowledged fabricating stories to friends and police, including claiming that hand injuries he sustained during the attack were from falling out of trees.

“Every time we do so it reinforces the pain of him having been killed so suddenly, and in such a senseless and brutal way. Our family has been sickened that Zack Coughlan pretended to help Jamie when in fact he is responsible for killing him.”

— Statement from the Family of Jamie Collins

Background Of The Particular Development

The conviction and sentencing of Zack Coughlan mark the conclusion of a complex criminal investigation by Avon and Somerset Police following the April 2026 fatal stabbing.

Initial emergency reports filed by Coughlan brought officers to Cleve Road in Filton, where Collins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Forensic teams gathered CCTV footage from three security cameras installed around the property by Coughlan himself, alongside mobile phone location analysis and blood evidence recovered from the victim’s bicycle.

The case highlighted interpersonal tensions within private student accommodations.

Collins, who was completing his final year in robotics alongside Coughlan, was described by relatives and fellow students as a passionate advocate for equality and inclusivity.

Coughlan’s conviction brings a formal judicial conclusion to a case that drew significant public and institutional attention across South Gloucestershire and Bristol.

Prediction: How This Development Can Affect University Student Communities And Shared Housing Dynamics

This landmark ruling and length of sentence are expected to impact university administrative policies, student housing oversight, and tenant relations within shared student accommodation.

Institutional Safeguarding And Conflict Resolution

Higher education institutions and student unions are likely to re-evaluate peer support networks and conflict resolution mechanisms within private rented accommodation. The circumstances of this case highlight how financial dynamics—such as student-landlord arrangements among peers—can heighten personal friction, potentially prompting universities to offer formal mediation channels for student living disputes.

Private Rented Sector And Peer-Landlord Agreements

The case is expected to influence how private student letting agreements and peer-owned arrangements are managed. Prospective student tenants and parents may become increasingly cautious regarding unconventional tenancy structures where co-tenants hold direct financial ownership over shared residences.

Focus On Campus Mental Health Support

In the wake of this high-profile trial, university welfare departments are anticipated to increase visible resources for mental health monitoring, distress reporting, and risk assessment among students living off-campus in private residential neighborhoods.
