Following up on one of the Home Office’s proposals for establishing a major asylum site in the village of Piddington, Oxfordshire, in the place of a former military facility, the residents there have escalated their situation to reflect their objections to the central government’s ministers. Moreover, the Home Office’s decision to follow plans to convert Site A at uk/local/bicester/">Bicester Garrison into self-contained housing was admitted by the local representatives to have been unannounced and without prior consultation. In response, in order to show their sentiments towards this decision, the Piddington residents have essentially organised peaceful community demonstrations and have called for a symbolic independence referendum to force Westminster to acknowledge their concerns.
The Home Office made the announcement of this asylum site facility decision in June, when it was released that Site A of Bicester Garrison – situated between Piddington and Upper Arncott, is going through a series of detailed feasibility assessments. If the site gets to pass these assessments, getting approval, the former Ministry of Defence site could accommodate up to 1250 single adult male asylum seekers aged 18 to 65 for a duration of 10 years. The proposal is actually part of a wider national initiative to transition from using commercial hotels toward independent accommodation on government-owned military assets.
A recent village hall meeting’s results only highlighted the feelings expressed by the locals as 96% of the attending residents supported the idea of holding a symbolic referendum to ‘leave the United Kingdom’. The Parish council leaders clarified however that the vote would not bind in an actual manner as it only acts as a purely campaign strategy to force the central government ministers to listen. The vote was also followed up by a peaceful picnic protest on the local recreation ground.
As national UK migration debates continue to spread and spark social media engagement, the protest has also drawn wider online attention and audience, like the one of the high-profile figure, tech billionaire Elon Musk.
In official papers, the Home Office reassures by stating that any operational facility would feature dedicated on-site healthcare, catering and security management to minimise local disruption.
