Oxford’s pet owners are greeted with good news as a 24-hour emergency animal hospital just opened – the first dedicated emergency veterinary hospital in Oxford that is open even throughout the night.
Iffley Vets, a local vet clinic on Iffley Road, runs Oxford’s first 24-hour emergency animal hospital. This project consists of a clinic that is never closed and where at all points there always are vets and nurses awake and working through the night of every single day of the week, 365 days a year.
Up until Monday – the 8th of June – if a dog or cat got very sick or hurt at any point of the night or very early morning, it was hard to actually seek quick, proper help. Within Oxford’s centre, most small vet offices close in the evening and therefore, in case of an emergency, individuals had to often drive out of the city, to Abingdon or Witney, to seek help from open emergency clinics.
The considerable amount of locals with pets in Oxford encouraged vets to stress the need for this 24-hour hospital as a rather immediate asset to the community.
Moreover, although there were options in the vicinity of Oxford, late night drives with an injured pet for longer distances represented a rather unpleasant and stressful experience for both the individual as well as its companion.
With a 24-hour open clinic, these kinds of unfortunate situations can be dealt with more ease, most importantly, the pet obtaining the necessary help faster with treatment and medicine.
Some of the facilities of this new hospital project include fast blood tests, X-ray machines and quiet, separate rooms for pets – to prevent unrest between animals.
During the day the clinic will maintain their regular check-ups and vaccinations, however, the nighttime team will handle emergencies.
